I have an idea to create a super infrared remote extender.  The thought is to use a phototransistor to receive the IR signal from a remote then retransmit the signal using an IR laser diode to get the range.  Using a universal remote should cut down on the circuit complexity.

What I want to do is can change the TV channel on my neighbors TV and have a little fun in the process.

I'm open to any ideas on how to build this device.

Better to use IR -> Photodiode -> RF module Transmitter (1Watt) -> up to 1 km distance -> RF module receiver -> IR LED

Lasers are very directional, unless you point them very tightly, you may miss the target. Plus, being IR, you couldn't see the light unless you use an IR viewer or IR capable camera.

If you want to control your neighbors tv, (I did that to the stupid jerk when they played loud music when I want to sleep) Try using a gang of IR leds (I used 140 LEDs, I reckon the power output about 600 lumen!!) on a strong driver, and aim the Leds approximately to the nearest window where the offending equipment resides and Smiley  Smiley

My thinking on the laser diode is all you have to do is hit the drapes in the window and that would diffuse the laser and control the TV.  To see the IR beam you can use a video camera.  I’ve used them in the past to verify IR from a remote control.

Hi Parmin

Only God knows how much I have missed you as well as the rest of our dear friends, this is my first post in any forum since I can’t remember when.

Your reply to the IR remote extender was very tempting, I have missed those type of replies  Cheesy… you really used 140 IR led’s  Huh… you are a killer dear friend. Grin

To Dex

I can’t imagine how you are going to adjust a narrow laser beam to the right angle of diffusion … I believe it will be even harder than pointing your 2mm diameter laser beam to 3mm sensor 10 meter distant.  It will take you a professional sniper to just switch your TV on   Cheesy.

The idea is that  diffused laser will faint Laser major characteristic of being coherent. (I will not discuss which type of laser you are thinking of …ie CO2, YAG … etc.)

Remote IR extenders are intended mainly to control off sight product that may exist in another room with no direct lined Path even for 100W halogen lamp (another house level is good example) …

Thank you all …

Hi Faros. wb!!
I miss you too, I am sure some others feel the same.
So, what have you been doing?

I used 140 IR leds because I happened to have a PCB made up for IR illuminationfor a CCD project, it is then simple job to switch the 780nm LEDs (for illumination) to the 940nm (remote controller type).
Yeah it is 140Leds  Tongue  Tongue
