The Proton site hosted by Crownhill site appears to be down (permanently?). There is a new web site http://www.protoncompilers.com, it would be nice if as many people as possible signed up for the site to show support for Les. If anybody has the skinny about what happened I for one would be curious.

it looks like a scam, maybe crownhill dropped support for the compiler and now he is trying to sell a cracked copy. it is easy to embedd any name in the title bar of the ide.
Also the dongle is fully clonable using a simple MCU with embedded usb functionality, so proton compiler is busted

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. Les has been supporting the compiler (and indeed expanding it) as a labour of love. It's he's baby and doesn't want to see it die. Crownhill appear to have pulled the plug, details not known by me. The web site has been put together by a few enthusiasts (not me, far too lazy) who I suspect feel that Les has been given a raw deal.
BTW you don't need to clone the dongle (why would you anyway) as there is a patched version od the protection file, courtesy of mitsos and pickit2
I wonder if anyone who knows, will say who actually owns the product?

Looks like there is a lot of piss and vinegar in the air between Lee and Crownhill based on the update to the site, hopefully, the compiler continues after the dust settles http://www.protonbasic.co.uk/Trade Marks of Crownhill Associates Limited Proton Development Suite™ Proton Basic™ Proton Plus™ L.E.T BASIC™
Proton Basic Web Site and Forum The Crownhill website protonbasic.co.uk and the associated forum are currently off line. No files or user data have been lost or deleted. Content created by users, is safely preserved and is available upon request.
Very Brief History - Proton Basic™ Proton Development Suite™ is a derivative work of Proton Basic™ and Proton Plus™, which are derivative works of the original Crownhill Product L.E.T BASIC™
Les Johnson was employed by Crownhill Associates, part of his remit was to develop and support L.E.T PIC Basic Compiler. Les Johnson was given access to the source code and background of L.E.T PIC BASIC Compiler along with knowledge of the License enforcement systems employed by Crownhill.
The Name L.E.T PIC BASIC was dropped at the request of Microhips lawyers because of trade mark infringement with the registered trademark PIC®
L.E.T BASIC had limitations, which were overcome by a rewrite of the compiler. Les Johnson undertook this task and Crownhill Proton BASIC was developed. Les Johnson was the sole developer of the new Crownhill Product which was marketed as Proton Basic™ & Proton Plus™. Proton Basic™ being a feature limited version of Proton Plus™.
Proton Basic™ & Proton Plus™ carry the Crownhill Copyright Notice, which was compiled into the product by Les Johnson , appearing during installation and in the 'About Box'
Crownhills, Proton Basic™ & Proton Plus™ utilised an editor which lacked many features that were present in the Editor / IDE produced by the Company, Mecanique. Mecanique entered into a commercial agreement with Crownhill, Mecanique produced a Editor / IDE for the Crownhill Proton Basic™ & Proton Plus™ compilers, it was designated ProtonIDE.
Crownhill negotiated with the Company Labcenter to allow a version of the Labcenter Proteus product to be bundled with Crownhills, Proton Basic™ & Proton Plus™
For marketing purposes, Crownhills, Proton Basic™ & Proton Plus™ names were dropped in favour of Proton Development Suite™ which incorporated a limited version of Labcenters Proteus Product , the Mecanique proton IDE and Crownhills, Proton Basic™ Compiler. Les Johnson remained the sole developer of the Crownhills Proton Basic™ Compiler.
In recognition of his work on the Crownhill Proton Basic™ Compiler. Crownhill entered into a profit sharing agreement with Les Johnson, related to sales of the compiler.
After an illness Les Johnson chose to leave the employ of Crownhill and has since developed versions of the Crownhills Proton Basic™ Compiler with Crownhills consent. Versions of the Proton Basic™ Compiler were released by Les Johnson, via the Crownhill website protonbasic.co.uk, these versions continued to carry the Crownhill Copyright Notice for some years.
In view of the fact that Les Johnson was onward developing the Proton Basic™ Compiler. In view of the dedication that Les Johnson had given to the development of the product. Crownhill made an offer to him, to take the whole of the compiler and associated products, domain names and the support forum, free of any charge and develop them as his own, commercialising them as he wished.
Crownhill did not receive a positive response from Les Johnson.
Crownhill then posted the offer on the public proptonbasic.co.uk. There was still no positive response from Les Johnson.
The public offer to Les Johnson, was removed - deleted - by a forum moderator whose registered name on the forum is John Drew. When asked why this action was taken, 'John Drew' advised that "Les Johnson had asked him to delete the message". User John Drew was removed as forum moderator.
Around this time, Les Johnson ceased direct contact with Crownhill.
Current Position Proton Basic™
Recently end 2020 - early 2021, Les Johnson announced via the Crownhill website protonbasic.co.uk, he would no longer compile versions of the Proton Basic™ Compiler supporting Crownhill license enforcement system.
It is now nearing 5 years since Les Johnson left employment with Crownhill, over that time the Crownhills Proton Basic™ Compiler was developed by Les Johnson to include new functionality and in doing so, lost some functionality. The product is no longer the product that it was in 2016 when Les Johnson was last employed by Crownhill. Todays - Feb 2021 - product is a 'derivative work' a newer and different product.
This derivative work, could be considered an enhanced version of Crownhills Proton Basic™ Compiler, a feature rich product with a future and life of its own. Certainly the 2021 version of the compiler is a product of Les Johnson making and without control or influence from Crownhill and without backward compatibility to the originating product.
For educational purposes and to make derivative works legitimate, by way of this web site we are making available the source code and binaries of some obsolete products. To include Crownhill BASIC Compilers and associated hardware.
Under the license below, Les Johnson is free to continue to work on the product he developed for Crownhill he may sell, give away or do as he wishes.
Existing users of Crownhills Proton Basic™ Compiler will be able to obtain from Crownhill License keys for the most recent version of Crownhills Proton Basic™ Compiler.
- For the purpose of clarity, trade marks are preserved and are the property of Crownhill Associates Limited. - Source code and binaries are released under the License set out below. - For derivative works, the date of release shall be 01-Sept-2016 that is to say, all derivative works published, distributed, sublicensed, and/or sold after that will be subject to the License set out below.
ProtonIDE ProtonIDE is a product of the Company, Mecanique. A written agreement exists between Mecanique and Crownhill Associates Limited providing the right to distribute the ProtonIDE in any way Crownhill sees fit, on the proviso that Mecanique and the developer of the ProtonIDE, Dr David Barker, will provide no support for the ProtonIDE in any form.
Where Crownhill Associates Limited incorporates the ProtonIDE in any distribution of Proton Basic™ the license set out below, shall incorporate ProtonIDE.
Crownhill / L.E.T Device Programmers For educational purposes, by way of this web site we are placing into the public domain the source code and binaries of Crownhill / L.E.T obsolete products.

i know there is a patch, it was me who 1 byte patched proton then other members made the job for all updated version, cloning dongle was just for learning and fun purpose

Less was the original authour of picBasic, under his company rosseta technologies. ( I was one of his testers) I believe Crownhill did there usual of find a good poduct, and market it under there name, they are not very good at looking after people. and I am sure Crownhills version is very biased. there was a disagreement and they parted company.
as well as the hacked crownhill one, Less is now marketing a new version, he was selling via E-Bay.
I belive it has a liftime activation based on keeping your initial file you purchase on E-Bay. I think it was about £45.

Les had a difference of opinion with Crownhill, which resulted in a parting of the ways.
Crownhill released Les from the contract to support Proton, and handed full ownership rights back to him.
It's NOT a scam as I bought a full copy on eBay from Les for £35 GBP.
I appreciate what we do on this site, but for £35 isn't it worth supporting Les in his work?

In todays world of the Internet of Things, I don't think Pic basic is the first thing that comes to mind, in any project. Microchip even bought into ARM devices. as another example how many 3s printers use Pic devices.? I still have a lot of Pic devices at home and still do work for the firm, I last worked for. but for projects the devices I use now are Sam21's, RP2040 with&without the W. easy to make a PCB that you can add the device to. We have never just cracked software of the small company. but the likes of Crownhill & Labcenter yes. I have paid both their licence fees. so much for the life time Licence fee. also Planet,CNC. who also in my book is a ripoff company. short story, long, they said they would allow the user to buy a licence for Chinese kit. a friend bought a licence from them, use the machine a few times, after a few months of not using the machine the code changed, they said here is your new code, but if the code changes again, you are using a Chinese clone, that was badly cracked, will have to buy a new licence. also you may note: there has been no posts on Proton, since the bust up with crownhill.

There are obviously new pricing trends in the IT world. After becoming cheaper for decades, certain items are now increasing in value in a more or less saturated market with frequent and lingering shortages. In the case of Planet CNC, you must buy both the software and the firmware. Such an interesting way to market a technology product. I have never used one. Are they any good? I am using one of those red USB controllers with an eagle logo on them.

I think the clones are better than the Planet,CNC builds, there was a keygen for the clones. I downloaded it and ran it once to get a licence, as a test. Iwas using a pen drive OS as I was not sure of who posted the key.gen. between downloading and testing work called in in, so it went on the back burner, when I came back to it, I could not find the pen drive, and could not remember where I got the key-gen the file name was like this "cbc.usb keygen 103" there is a board on a well known, social media site that give you the licence, just take time to get it. for your board try this - works well in free mode too, https://drufelcnc.com/ I could not get into cracking mode but should be an easy fix to give unlimited lines of code. program was writen in Visual Basic

I think for the £35 Les is asking for the new version, it's not worth cracking, so I paid for it (Les is a good guy anyhow).
With respect Pickit, there are those of us who, despit years of trying to learn C, it just WON'T STICK. Maybe its the stupid syntax it uses, or maybe (more likley) I'm just dumb. Having been brought up on BASIC, I found Proton, or rather Positron as it is now called, the logical transition. Sure PIC's are old hat, but they work for me.

Did you miss my comment on No posts for Proton /now/ Positron in other words we are not suppling cracks for it. life time license from Crownhill, the price they charged - and the support they did offer on their forum was utter poo. get insults from Mavrick and others in there, was not on.
