PCB Microscope

Hi all,
I’m looking for recommendations for a good microscope with screen or with output for monitor.

I’ve got one of those cheap ones but it’s not very good

is it for repair or inspection
for repair its is ok with 10x and below 5-7x will be ok
if it is for inspection you can go higher

i suspect you are talking about stereo microscopes
there you get depth vision

you can check l rossmans repairs i remember that he talked about the most preferrable magnification when doing repairs
i cant remember when it was but it was some time ago

get one where you can adjust its magnification lets say 1-10x

also the focus length is also of importance movement to and away from the lens where it stays focused

It’s mainly for repair really, I’ve also heard you can use and heat seeking camera to aid detect faulty components ?
I might be getting involved in repairs on circuit boards for someone and just weighing up the pros and cons

I use an Andonstar AD249S, both for inspection and for assembly, I find it excellent and has an affordable cost.

heat camera is excellent addition for servive surely much better than finger sensory

a zoom between 1 to 10 would suffice the higher you go the shorter th focal length will be

you will mostly be using 4 to 7 depending on component size qnd your eyes

I have it and very satisfied. High enough so can solder below it,
The minus is that magnification is too high, and some times you need smaller one, but can not change. However it is perfect for my use (semi professional) and very low cost and very good quality. Can make video, shoots, working with internal batter, connection to USB as  also to PC.

My personal experience says that if you always handle small devices like mobiles etc, there are lot good ones. But if you are also handling SMD devices with through hole too, just as in the case like Alex from Northridgefix, consider to try microscopes with detachable lenses, and those which are supplied with lens with longer focal length, say more than minimum 6 inches from the board to the lens and maximum focal of 12 inches work excellent. Or the silliest problem you will face is working on the board with a soldering iron / multi meter probes, and these will touch the lens. This case will make you concentrate on taking care of your lens rather seeing / working on the board. I had personally faced this and fortunately found a mobile repair shop guy who was interested in it.
