Buddy has some security cameras setup in his house (converted old cell phones) that he can access over the Internet and thought it would be nice if we could activate some items remotely, for example a buzzer or maybe a light when he sees the dog doing something it shouldn't be.
Figured this would be easy to throw together on a Raspberry Pi, but then thought that platform would probably be overkill and could use something like an ESP32.

I'm most comfortable using a PIC and Arduino, but am not married to any platform in particular. Is there any suggestion that I should look at that would be low cost and give him a web interface (don't really want to code up a whole phone app for him to use) to be able to activate a few outputs over the Internet? Figured it'd be a fun little project for me to take my mind off of the assembly coding I've been doing lately for no good reason on the 6502 Smiley

For cheap ESP8266 I recommend ESPEasy project

It has lots of settings configurable via web UI and simple API.
You can write your own fancy controller (it could be anything from html/css to special langs or curl script) to control your ESP via provided API.

Ended up using the ESP8266 rather than the ESP32 so thanks for that! Used the Arduino IDE and got the libraries for the ESP8266 using https://randomnerdtutorials.com/how-to-install-esp8266-board-arduino-ide/
This video was helpful to get up and running, and was already familiar with the MIT App Inventor as I went through a learning tutorial on it for my daughter, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAqNKaX3LQ0
