I'm kind of irritated Microhip stopped supporting their REAL ICE product.
https://www.microchip.com/Developmenttools/ProductDetails/DV244005I recall the ICD3 couldn't monitor global structures which could be done REAL ICE. (I added the structure to the watch window and it just doesn't show up). Anyone know if this has changed in the ICD4?
I got a bit spoiled after one of my clients brought me a Lauterbach TRACE32 emulator to replace an unreliable Nohau 8051 emulator. That thing was great. Using a special emulation version of the 8051 chip, I could see and record everything in its trace buffer without disturbing execution. It also communicated over ethernet and was the most reliable emulation/debug tool I've used. But, I haven't used it in many years since they started charging large annual maintenance fees and I haven't used an 8051 in new design in years.
