I just noticed two shares (via link files) that have been downloaded a highly disproportionate number of times from my Mediafire account.

It seems reasonable to assume that someone is re-sharing links outside of Sonsivri.

For example:

http://www.sonsivri.to/forum/index.php?topic=2027.msg165699#msg165699
Link file downloaded 74 times. PDF file downloaded 116 times

http://www.sonsivri.to/forum/index.php?topic=57970.msg166523#msg166523
Link file downloaded 34 times. PDF file downloaded 159 times!

Just sharing the information... It's not something we can control I guess.

Almost every file on this site is shared somewhere, hardly news...

Years ago, before I was a member here and had access to the attached links, I would read this forum and then head over to some long forgotten Asian electronics site and get the files...  They would flat out copy and paste the release post and attachments from here within hours...  The site was pretty much an Asian copy of this site...

I have no problem with file sharing, but I don't like cut&paste of the links, that is both from here and in here, from other sites.

why can't the lazy buggers re-up the files, and share the new link.

I have also noticed that some of my own shares have been leaked to some other forum(s). I do not like it at all. Because it may in some cases cause the upload to be deleted. If links are kept inside the forum family the risk for this is minimal. So who whom you ever are doing this. Get your self some free hosting account and create your own share

one thing to do is password the file, so at least they know where it came from, or they have to remove it before posting it to other sites.

Hi All

I suggest you upload a file with a random serial number instead of text name and a pass word known only to the members of this site
This will eliminate random search spiders in down load site.

All the best

Most of the this forum is not open for non members any more. And non members will also not see any links. So such a measure will not be needed

As Sideshow Bob said, most of the files are members only, but even those that are passworded are copied, in all fairness, I would think it has to be a member sharing the links, PDF's I don't think anyone passwords them, I think you can password them for opening, it becomes a pain to have to keep typing in the password, and someone can always download the file, remove and repost the file as their own on another site.

The main saving grace with that is they do have to re-up to their own service, it causes issues when members want to download links then the link has either been deleted or "your daily allowance has been exceeded for this file" and the link has been "downloaded" 4 or 5 times, you know someone is sharing it elsewhere.

Not a lot you can do, I guess the only think you have to bear in mind when posting stuff is that it may end up on someone elses site with your name removed, I have noticed this with my Eagle patches, oh well!

On that note, several years ago I was a member at a very private site (under 50 members) where some exclusive photos of a collectible item that was in a private collection were shared...   The person that took those photos for the members exclusive use had given his word to the items owner they would not be made public, so he was livid that they were being shared outside the private forum...

Anyway in secret with the site owner I wrote a sever script that dynamically placed a 6 pixel long (black white) binary line on the bottom right of the image based on the members user number...  Busted that leak in no time as every member was then downloading a unique tagged photo...  We never disclosed to anyone how we tracked leak as it's an out in the open watermark, but it was very effective none the less...

That is a very good idea!

You would have to do something clever as the files are not hosted here however.

Yeah, you also need sever side scripting access wherever the files are hosted...  The same idea can be used to log IPs, for example so it can work on remotely hosted files if you have access to the forums server logs to cross reference who read that thread with what IP at what time...  The idea could be expanded even further to tag other file types hidden in for example the header info like changing the "This program cannot be run in DOS mode" text string to an IP and date/time...

I see it as protecting the link, not the file.
Some members in here have no respect, for the effort of  others.
