Way too many subcategories, and nothing but a navigational nightmare...  I'll bet most of those sub-forums would only get 1 post if any post every 6 months or year...  And I'll bet the staff would be moving 'wrong' forum threads around every day...

As a veteran forum admin since the BBS (pre-Internet) days, IMO you have to evaluate current posting content and volume before you even begin to propose categories...  With that said, as an example take the last 6 months worth of post on this entire forum and categorize those post into your proposed slots, how many empty or nearly empty sub-forums do you have now?  If they are empty they are not needed, and if they only have a few post they are not needed...

At the end of the day, since I'm a regular daily visitor around here, I'll bet you will see upwards of 90% of the categories you proposed above would be one hit wonder categories or mostly dust bowl ghost towns, that never justified their own header...

Cynetron - I'll bet the papers on your desk overlap by exactly one inch, don't they?

(that was a joke)

Seriously, great idea, but I don't think it's workable. Twenty-five percent of the people here contribute and post. 70% are just parasites and 5% seem to download a link then leave, never to be heard from again. I think the mods have all they can do keeping the Vandals outside the gates. It's a lot of effort for the 25% that know what they are looking for anyway.

Absolutely nothing wrong with passing on an idea, though.

Holy categorie nightmares batman  Tongue
way to many subcategories for me  Smiley
And just who is going to hunt down and move all the existing posts into all these categories Pickit? Metal?  Cheesy won't be me
what's the difference between taking 10 min to search through our system now or 15 min searching through 50 categories and then looking for what you want , nobody posts now and if they had to weed through all those categories to post   Huh well I don't think they would bother to post at all

Too many categories are a restriction sometimes.

I can see we need just a few new boards, with subs. software, hardware

1. cnc
2. 3d printers
3. and possible holding board for the post that are hard to place.

(that was a joke)

=) nope actually opposite only have one notebook

it looks like nightmare yep but its become very usefull with time, trust me i'm an engineer  Grin

its kinda law guys, if you know properties of subject it will direct itself to that category

my goal turning into everyday use type of forum

This forum already have reputation, only need some order and good live seen topics

but meanwhile wont turn into edaboard (same mess they have)

some categories will have low subject count but they wont have same message again and again

mods will only delete or move

if you need help i can help no problem, only give me move auth

also Recent Posts have to move to the top and should be at least last 20 topic not message

dont fear changes  Grin

Check how i use my pc;  Wink

« Reply #8 on: August 26, 2014, 03:35:51 15:35 »

My software and documents archives look a lot like that (all 3TB of it!) but I really think it's overkill for a forum. There just aren't that many posts to need categorising. We would end up with many (almost) empty categories. Plus there will be many posts that overlap two or more categories and confuse people.

I would think a subcategory called: "FPGA, CPLD, VHDL & Verilog Area" under "Electronics" would not hurt.
"All about programmable circuitry. This includes Hardware, Software and Projects"

Best Regards
