Also, there is a super cool project made by a German guy for a LDI (laser direct imaging) on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SNkzoOvoD8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIIwU29H3E8 He is using one (or two) Bluray laser diodes from an Xbox. Unfortunately, he did not release plans, software or schematics.

Raster scanning mechanically is painfully slow and unsophisticated.

I'd think G-Code CAM'd for a laser engraver is what he's using. Lots of stuff out there to convert a BMP or DXF to raster, so it's not magical or even a huge effort. You can even buy TTL-controlled blue LASER modules if you're really lazy - at that point it's just a mapping of a port and pin to turn the laser on and off.

Hello  Smiley
I have access to my friend workshop and I use a mini 4 axis CNC milling machine made by Xendol china
It is small machine and in firs look maybe you think it is a toy and worthless but after 6 years of testing and working with this machine I think this machine is so cost effective , my friend bout it about 5000$

this is some information about this machine

controller : pc based via LPT port
controller software : Mach3 ( xendol rename this software and add a usb dongle as protection luck and I really don't like this policy of them  Angry )
controlling method : Open loop

motors : 4 Nema23 stepper motor X Y Z A ( A is rotary )

motor driver : 4 oem chines micro step stepper motor drive

PC Interface card : simple LPT buffer for connecting motor drives to PC

spindle : 1000 W 10 to 1800 RPM speed digitally adjustable and PID controlled tapping compatible ( cw & ccw )

linear guide , ball screw  ; standard T table

I will try to add some picture of this cnc tomorrow

with best regards
