I use EPIC because of its external voltage support which helps a lot powering the target board while programming ICSP. It supports 18f series and also you can add your new devices to the config file if it is not currently supported! For 24f devices I think ICD2 is the best also with a debugger!

Hi to all, I have many programmer's in colection also (ALL07 - fabricate programmer)... Extra is PICkit2 also ICD2 but if you want low cost programmer use EPIC plus programmer because it support almost all picmicro and if you little modificate it you will have extra low cost and good programmer. Use it with EPICWIN is good but with WINPIC800 is extra produse programmer ! In WINPIC800 you can edit .ini file and you will have support for almost all picmicro. If you little modificate Vdd and Vpp voltage you can program low voltage device to.
Now any suggest for me anybody can tell me hove to wire ZIF 40 to support most picmicro without jumpers and swich and to use only one Vpp. I know to is very hard but i wait any suggest.
Many thank's to all on forum.

I am new to PIC and want to play with it. So I need to build a programmer. Please advice me which programmer should I build considering most supported device including PIC18F, which also supports WINPIC800, heard it is very handy than ic-prog. Found this PIC programmer based on JDM programmer and seems handy to me because it supports both LVP and HVP. Does anybody used this programmer ? Does it supports winpic800 ? If so how to configure ? http://feng3.cool.ne.jp/en/pg5v2.htmlThanks in advance......

I can endorse the advice to buy a pickit2. Over the years I have made many DIY programmers, but they all had some limitations finally I bought a pickit 2. Microchip upgrade the software and firmware frequently and it can now program a large selection of pics. The amount of money I have spent over the years building DIY programmers would have paid for several pickit2s.
