My 3D Scanning SystemI started this project during the first year of my PhD. I just wanted to share it here.
In this paper we present a scanning system capable of acquiring the shape of 3D objects. A line of light is projected onto the physical objective. The image from a video camera is analysed to estimate the position the surface profile, so that the shape and volume of the object can be derived. The system scans objects at reasonable speeds and creates good-resolution images of the scanned object. The running technique of Laser Triangulation is implemented with a high-resolution camera, a laser diode, and electronics incorporated into a small sensor package that rotates from a fixed position. The resultant data are transmitted to a PC. This 3D system can be used as a auxiliary tool for radiotherapy gating methods that are typically done in one dimension.

Scanner componentsTheoretically, all you need to build this scanner is:
• A camera (or webcam)
• A line laser
• A stepper motor
• A programming language to create the interface (I used LabVIEW)
• Implementation of the algorithm described in the paper
If this project is of any interest to you, please let me know.
Enjoy!
