Servo controlled Voltage Stabiliser--Project
Here a motor shaft is coupled with an adjustable tongue of a Variac. When the AC mains voltage is high ,the motor turns in anti-clockwise direction to decrease the output voltage. When the AC mains voltage is low,the motor turns in clock-wise direction to increase the output voltage.
Has anybody experimented with this type of stabiliser?

I do know the method but do realise the feedback is very slow . This will only work when its no problem take several periods response time . Also you could consider a transformer with multiple input voltages . You select the proper input winding by measuring the output voltage followed by triggering the triac of choice . More modern systems use creative pfc like setups followed by bridge tied load or by injecting the buck voltage into a autotransformer . Good luck and be carefull

Servo Voltage Stabiliser is not old topology? main terget is constant output, so what do u think about smps with pwm. if i am going to wrong please point out why not. Servo Voltage Stabiliser make with some opamp with feedback.

Use the same system as auto rotating solar cell, or line following robot.
get two readings, one on the high end and the other on the low end of the output.
feed the reading to a comparator to generate high or low pulse to rotate the shaft.
Remember you need a hysteresis so the motor will stop during tolerance reading otherwise your motor will always rotate and heats up.

Dear Malcolam, I have Done it with 16f72. Included with 24c04 to store the output volt setting over load setting hi cut lo cut etc. Port c is used for seven segment display, Rb.7 an Rb.6 is used for rotating motor up an dn. Simply i am going to setting mode and after setting all parameters like output volt hicut auto mannual etc i am coming to the main routine. where after measuring output volt i am rotating motor right or left with the help of triac which is driven by moc 3021. the display is showing input, output, current timer etc. Which is done in the interrupt routine. ANY PARICULAR QUESTION IF YOU WANT TO ASK YOU ARE MOST WELCOME. THANKS

Dear Shoel, Smps with pwm is used for power supply generally DC. Where as Servo voltage stabiliser is used for stabilisation of mains input voltage with 1% regulation. The another technology has come where Variacs are not used in servo stabilisers bucking and boosting is done by switching Igbt or mosfets to the primary of buck boost transformer. I am working on it day night. But still in Development stage thanks

Hi Malcom,
There is one servo voltage stabiliser like you described in the factory I am working and had the chance to see inside. It was an absolute simple design. I do not know if I can have another chance to take pictures and let you know but at least I can describe now.
A kilowatt of a toroidal transformer used as otto connection. The free end was tapped onto the toroid by a carbon wheel and rotate from the first winding to the last to get you obtain about 0 to 245V. And the driving mechanism was just an ordinary car window wiper motor. This motor has an existing gear system to reduce the speed and simply driven by 12V. To change the direction of motor ( which will let you to increase or decrease the voltage at the output ends) change the polarity of the applied voltage. Again a very simple window comparator was doing the drive duty of motor. Thats it.
The drawback is the reaction time and is too much. It can not follow the voltage fluctuations rapidly. Takes about two second to set to the new position.
Please let me know if interested more.
regards.

Hello Looser, Yes,Yes, I like to know more.
Do you have any commercial Servo stabilisers Service Manuals-eg,- -NELCO,SEN & PANDIT,OPTO,Quatron,EC,etc, or any other circuit diagrams for your reference?
Regards.

I think this design is good but Auto Transfomer Tapping Change with Triacs Design is better So all friends ?

Hi 9thwonder, Yes, you can try with Buck-Boost Topology, but remember that peak current in this Topology is 5.5 Times of the nominal current. Keep that in mind. I am interested in this type of product as it is based on smps. Please let us apprised regarding your progress if possible. For looser, It looks like conventional Auto transformer based one. Please enumerate more regarding it, if not schematic. It is interesting.

Hi guys
I draw one circuit to be used for the voltage stabiliser above. Hope will meet your needs.
Regards.
