Depents ofcource what you want ti build, but a PIC16F628a is a very good one to start with.It has almost everything in it.

Also 16F877 or 16F877A are internal resource rich MCU´s.

if you are using a high level compiler, surely  a pic18 will be more than comfortable... by far

yes sir pic18 is far more comfortable and flexible to use, *off topic: by the way anyone of you guys used 16F887, i've just downloaded an ebook from from mikroelectronica and i think it would be great for beginers like me...  Grin
