I need power supply 0-230V AC/DC, at list 500W, controled by serial communications.

Can you recomend manufacture,  please.

Hi, I don`t think that exist developed solution. What is purpose of that device? Serial communication is RS232, RS485 or smth. else?

I need to do automated testing machine for small switch power supply. I would like to
communicate  (RS232 or RS485) and control output voltage by PC and control if testing devices
working well.

In the 1980's our workshop built a test bench the used a reostat for 0 to 230V ac, this was controlled with a motor that has a slipping clutch, today you could control one with a stepper motor.

You can use manualy controlled autotransformer (also called LATR: Laboratory Auto TRansformer) with hobby servo machine.

Or if you can`t get it, use triac dimmer with simply rectifier. That dimmer controlled by DMX protocol thru RS485. Regulating characteristic will be non-linear, so you can use only 128 steps from 256. For example http://www.exclusivefountains.co.uk/dmx-dimmer.htm

Hi,

Technically what you need is an electronically variable AC power supply. DMX dimmers generally use Triac based phase angle control. This is sufficient for controlling lights. However for your purpose you need a truly variable AC power supply.
  • Variac + Servo Motor Based
  • IGBT based static controller

All you need to do is use a micro which takes command from the RS232 to set the reference voltage and your circuit should take care of that. Both ways it is highly possible. I am sorry I cannot share code or schematic of my already done work because it is a commercial project. However can help you through this forum to achieve your goal.

Hi Snoopy,

I really could never finish my website. Also I don't have a product of my own. I run a design house in a small capacity. So I develop and deliver product to my clients.

For your application try searching the AC Chopper appnote on the ST website http://www.st.com/stonline/products/families/evaluation_boards/steval-ihm006v1.htm#documentation .
I did a rather complex design but a friend on web alias "walkura" pointed this to me.

So you can do a plain simple PID backed PWM or open loop without any feedback.

Elgar is the best in programmable AC sources, but they are quite expensive.
