Go to this site http://www.romanblack.com/picsound.htm their are a lot of explanations not in basic but its not complicated i test it with a 16F88 in assembler without EEprom all data a in flash memmory with long jump and big table.

for record sound easy and low cost you are use a chip ISD25XX , the xx is the time, this chip use a 05, 15, 30 ,60 and 120 Seg of record, and the interface for record and play is very easy implementation, into of datasheet aplycation note wiht diagram for your use.

get this  http://www.winbond-usa.com/mambo/content/view/36/140/   and  you are  done!,  it is  easy if  yoyu get  this IC, because  with just a pic  you are never  going to  get to record  something  with quality
