I want to make small pick and place machine.

I have seen some videos and various Lego Mindstorms contraptions that would do such things, pick and move items, or sort bricks etc. My suggestion is to start with a small model, create a proof of concept first and the move to a bigger models that do more things. Lego Mindstorms is an interesting platform because you already get the computing and mechanics - you just need some imagination to put them together.

Of course there are other options to do this and you have not been exactly clear what is it you'd like to accomplish.
