I'm thinking of converting my Chinese cnc (3020) into a pick and place machine for hobby work. Has anyone worked on a similar project. I obviously need a compressor of some sorts and the pneumatic lines etc. Any suggestions about this?

Open Source SMT pick and place system is the best for what you want:

OpenPnp will solve the software part, on the hardware part, you will need to add a vacuum pump, one vacuum valve (for each head), one air/vent valve for each head, and a controller capable of receiving gcode and driving the motors for X,Y, Z and rotation axis A (for one head/nozzle). The rest is to decide on the head nozzles to use and the feeders to use depending on your needs and production volume.   See also: https://github.com/openpnp/openpnp-openbuilds/wiki/Build-Instructions
