Hi, I have been playing with an online tool (heatsinkcalculator) which has nice graphics, temperature distribution maps, multiple heat sources, multimple thermal interfaces, air flows, etc. But the free demo is very limited, has some fixed parameters and dimensions you can't modify. So I would like something more flexible and powerful, with the possibiliti of changing the cooling fluid (water, air, etc).



Any good experiences with other calculators/apps/software ?

Define "Better" -- whats better to you?

I have had good experiences with full CFD software like Ansys and Comsol. These feature full 3D modeling and are very comprehensive. They are also quite complicated relative the website calculator toys.
If you must use a free tool, then forget it.

As an aside. I do not hope you plan to make your own heatsink from say scarp metal plates. That will not be advisable at all

Seriously, all depends what you are doing, how much you want to spend, how much heat you need to dump and into what kind of environment, how many you're making, and if you need to look like you're irreplaceable to your boss when the layoffs come.

Wll yeah...huh. You can to some extent use scarp plates to make some simple heatsinks that do when you need to dissipate low wattages. And some heat sink is better than none. But if you try to make a more complex heat sink sandwiching plates together and bend them into a heat sink ish shape. You will have the problem that the thermal resistance between each plate will be quite high or worse. And hence it will be  bad design idea from the start
