May 2006 nuts and volts has an excellent article on making a digital capactiance meter, that could be implemented into your project. Personally i want one of those forceps I forget whose makes them but I've seen them advertized in circuit cellar you pick up SMT parts with them and they automatically tell you resistance, capacitance or inductance of the part, but they cost about $350.00 USD. Perhaps that would be a great project!
