Here is the step up I made for my ICD2 clone.
It was difficult for me to have the original IC but had these cheap 12f629 handy. I will only need the internal comparator module, so any other processor having something similar will do.

Zab I used a 12K pot as a load and moved from that value down. I could drain up to 1.58 ma approximately. You could scale the divisor, witch is already draining 2.5 ma for more.
I concur with pickit2 that no more is necessary. I had no other purpose for this circuit.
I tried to find the spec from microchip programming specifications about consumption for this programming voltage but i did not find other than timing constrains.

I tried to find the spec from microchip programming specifications about consumption for this programming voltage but i did not find other than timing constrains.
I think it is a high impedance input, current is negligible for flash devices, may be OTP devices draw more current, I remember that 18F series draw as low as 300uA, I can't remember where I read that, sorry.

There was once a clone of ICD2 with only a single 18F something chip (no it wasn't a Pickit2). It was a very rare model. I longed for a clone of that to come along but never did. Does anyone know if it's still absent or not?

This one has an open loop for the generation of vpp, so you have to be more careful to get the proper vpp. Based on this idea I tried to get a little improvement. This one solves the vpp problem by an external source. Both links are based on the work of Lothar Stolz. You have a 16F876 PIC witch is not upgradable by MPLAB, neither you can connect & power the board though USB. There is another version discussed in www.edaboard.com that has a 16F877A & a 18F4550. The later one replacing a cypress USB bridge circuit used on most ICD2. The power circuit for vpp is originally controlled by a mcp41010 (digital potentiometer) and a TL497ADR in many ICD2 out there. Maybe there is no problem of assembling the original circuit. I tried to use the components I already had.

metal: None of them. It was an official clone or should I say version, forgive me for not mentioning. It connected through USB as the original ICD2. Well now I'm really not sure what it looked like but it was quite tiny and wasn't a Pickit2. Anyway I think it's still absent.

truly interested I am, I searched for such version, but what I understood is that there must be a way to interface the clone to PC, firmware by microchip doesn't originally support that, they used CY chip as I recall, seems a customized clone as well.

Yup the original ICD2 used the CY IC. I must confess I haven't seen any pictures of the inside of the 18F version. Just a couple of pictures of its package and a text mentioning that it used an 18F PIC. I looked for some pics but can't find any as of yet.

I searched the net and found that the version I was talking about is 'ICD2 LE', LE for 'Light Edition'. I was also mistaken about the 18F chip. It too included 2 chips like the original, only difference was a tidier package. Sry for misguidance, it's been quite long since I used or programmed a PIC. Please ignore my posts.
