In an tech company, my experience has been

The best Managers .... have an engineering degree + background.

The best Marketers .... have an engineering degree + background.

The best Executive team ... have an engineering degree + background.

The best "apps" engineers ... have an engineering degree + background.

The best CEO .. .. .


Well, yes of course  there are exceptions.. but if you develop & sell technical products, hell, even the janitor needs a tech background!

OK, engineers are always better. I and a colleague wrote a perl code for some task:

He wrote the code much faster than I did, and it worked for that purpose, but..

I did write the code, but I was slower, I seeked for some general windows-independent routines/Libs..

My code worked for 4 years, on all XP PCs, while his code did not. There were things he did not pay attention for and he had to chnage some windows settings, my code also worked on win 7, while his did not. My code replaced his code quickly two weeks later after we finished our codes.

I am an engineer, while he is not.

An engineer with tech background can easily convince die kunden better and faster. An MBA memorizes what he hears from engineers about a product, I 've seen it already :- )

An engineer can easily adapt himself to do what MBA guys do, but usually not the vice versa..

Conclusion: it is dependent on our personal experience.

Because the training in the way of thinking is completely different - analysis, consequences, selflessness vs mindless rote, live for the moment, personal greed. Sadly, the MBA thinking seems to dominate engineers that get that additional accursed degree.

A corporation takes on the persona of its leadership, a society takes on the consequences of its corporations.
