Cheaper hardware development tools...

Funny, I need only 1 programmer/debugger tool (ICD 2) to work with all PICs (8 bit as well as 16 bit). Its price tag is about $160. There is also a couple of clones with price tag from $60. Is that expensive?

AVR Debugger JTAGICE mkII which can debug all the debugable AVRs costs over 200$! Is that inexpensive? Also to my knowledge GNU is being ported to PICs. I think both PIC & AVR have inexpensive tools if you know what to search for!

Get learn both micro's AVR & PIC. Both
AVR and PIC are sustained by a lot of applications.
And this fact rise these micro's to top.
My opinion

Bottom line is that AVR are much more flexible than PIC.

Just to add a bit more to the discussion, before it gets too polarised.
I have recently done several AVR based projects, which went fine,  and also ARM7 based project, where the ARM7  was a cheaper solution than a (top end  ie '128) AVR. And it has a good GNU based tool chain.

Hi,
I am a PIC user. Recently I have studied ATmega and ATtiny and find the structure and construction of ATtiny and ATmega is somehow better than PIC. Speed is also faster than PIC and price is less than half of PIC. But PIC is having better alternatives as it is having lot of products and ATtiny and ATmega are limited in numbers. Both Atmel and PIC are beautiful products. According to the requirement, one can choose any one if he has knowledge of both. If time and scope permit, one can learn both and utilize according to requirements. Instead of arguments and rearguments, I think both Atmel and PIC are excellent products and to optimize our requirement, we should utilize any one or both of them. There is no end of learning. Knowledge never goes in vain.
