The USB-AVRISP R1 from ElecCenter (www.eleccenter.com) is a professional cost effective In-System Programmer covering all AVR 8-bit RISC Microcontrollers. If to talk about AVR programmers, I think it must be JTAG debugger with ISP capability. There are a lot of such cheap designs.

Hi Kabron,
That is exactly what I am looking for - JTAG debugger with ISP. My $500 ICE is now a piece of junk since it cannot handle the new Mega Devices.
Can you tell me where to find some real good literature on this ?
A quick search in the net did bring a lot of info but I am not getting a clear picture as to  how to go about.
Even the JTAG header pinout seems to differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Yes,
it works like a STK500 compatible programmer and can program any AVR MCU

There are many similar type of USB AVR ISP programmers and all them work well.
